Giant Siamese Carp fishing Bung Sam Ran

It was a lovely day the sun was out and the day looked like it would come up to a nice temperature for fishing, we had agreed to met Jep at Bung Sam Ran, by the time we arrived the boys had a line in the water. Now Jep is a bit of a quality fisherman not only is he the Sawai king but also unbeknown to many he is also the Giant Carp King, Jep has a bit of a history in Siamese Carp, as you will see below.

I ordered a coffee and walked down to see how the guys were doing, Boonsong was on the rod waiting to hook up as usual. I stayed for a while shooting the breeze then had to leave to take care of some business. Well my timing was such I nearly missed the action, I was just about to leave the lake when a young chap came running up to me and says "Jep, Jep! He hooked a big fish!" I sprinted back round the lake to find Jep in the middle of some fine action standing on the aerator machinery platform, with the fish going past the bungalow, I un-locked the bungalow door and we passed the rod around the side and the fight was on, with the 50lb mono singing a high pitched song we decided to name it the Mekong song. After about 25 minutes we glimpsed the fish for the first time, it wasn't a Giant Mekong at all! It was a Large Giant Siamese Carp. The fight continued with several long and unstoppable runs before finally the fish was in the net.

After seeing the fish roll I was off to get the Weigh Station as this was one Big carp, within a few minutes the scales were set up and the fish had had time to get some oxygen, its always a dilemma with the large carp since they are such a precious resource, but very prone to succumbing to low oxygen levels, but having held this fish upright in the water for some minutes, not far from the aerators it had made a good recovery due to the high oxygen content in that area, we were confident enough to haul it out and have a weigh in. We had a bit of a problem at this point it was heavy! With three people holding onto the fish we managed to raise it just enough to get it into the sling, this was a fine fish! And at 49.4kg it would be many anglers dream catch. However, Like I said before Jep has a bit of history with the Giant Siamese Carp at Bung sam ran...I'd noticed he didn't seem quite as excited as us, and I commented on it.

Fishing Bung Sam Ran

Turns out that this Giant Carp although big, is far from Jep's personal best for the Giant Siamese Carp, but it's the only one he has managed to weigh. Just a few months earlier he had a Giant carp that is possibly one of the largest in the lake. The estimated weight of that carp (pictured below) varied by 10kg between 3 very experienced guides and anglers who witnessed the catch. The estimates range from 85KG to 95Kg, and theres been others in excess of 50kg too.
